"The Gulistan"
1. The Gift of speech
Now while thou last the wondrous
power of word
Let every thought in shining grace
appear;
Tomorrow, when Deaths
messenger is here,
He will constrain thee to depart unheard.
- This stanza means that, we, humans have the gift of speech so that we can clearly express wath are our thoughts and opinions but before death comes, we should express our thought because we will lose the chance once the death arrives.
2. On the Deception of Appearances
The man that never will declare his
thought.
Conceals a soul of honor or of sin
Dost think that silent jungle's minds
hold naught
Perchance a lurking tiger sleeps
therein.
- This stamza means that the person who is quiet hides a manner we do not know. we dont know his/her mind but perhaps there is a sleeping tiger that waits to be waken up, in other words, he/she might be terrible when angry
3. On Cultivating Good Manners
They who in youth to manners ne'ers
attend
Will, in advancing years, not gain
aquire.
Wood, while 'tis green, thou may
with pleasure bend;
When dry, thou canst not change it
save by fire.
- This stanza means that we should be deciplined while we are young because it is hard to decipline someone who is already an adult.
